A distinct line of consecutive rectangular shell-inlays runs along the whole length of these chopsticks, creating an opalescent motif over the luxurious depth of red and black lacquer. When the pair is placed side by side, a checkered pattern is revealed, inspired by the auspicious ichimatsu pattern, which symbolizes unending continuity, development and prosperity.
The name Kai-kiriko has been thoughtfully coined for this set, epitomizing the beautifully arranged shell inlays that grace the surface. Handcrafted by Furui Masahiro, a designated traditional craftsperson of Wakasa lacquerware, these chopsticks allow you to experience the rich beauty of Wakasa lacquerware at your very fingertips.
These chopsticks are adorned with a bold inlay design of thinly sliced abalone. After an initial ten layers of a natural lacquer coating, the finely cut shell inlays are gently placed upon the lacquer surface after which an additional twenty coats are applied to enhance its shine and durability. The mother-of-pearl inlays possess a stunning gleam under the decadent coats of lacquer after being immaculately polished.
Both pairs of chopsticks are exceptionally lightweight and with their square-shaped design allow for a comfortable hold.
The set comes in a paulownia box with a lid that features elegant Japanese calligraphy displaying the characters “Wakasa Lacquerware Chopsticks” along with the artisan's name. Whether as a gift for a friend or family member, or purchased for your own personal use and enjoyment, these chopsticks are a splendid choice that is certain to bring joy.
